Resources for Teaching AI Ethics to Children and Teens

AI technology improves daily, introducing us to new and exciting programs that can make our lives easier or spark our imaginations. While some AI can be a great learning tool, sometimes using AI isn't ok. AI has sprouted many ethical issues everybody should consider before they decide when and how to use AI.

AI Bias and Error

AI bias refers to a result generated by machine learning models based on biased assumptions made during the creation of the algorithm. These algorithms are trained using human-generated data, so sometimes, it shares human errors, biases, and harmful beliefs.

· Cognitive bias refers to errors in thinking. These biases can get into the AI model accidentally or purposefully.

· Biased information can have real-world consequences for people affected by their predictions.

· Incomplete data may lead to bias due to inaccurate representation.

Academic Integrity

The use of AI models could have negative effects on academic integrity. AI models could help students cheat on exams and homework. This could undermine the accuracy and reliability of educational testing and lead to students who didn't learn all they needed to succeed.

· AI systems can generate original content that the current AI detector models cannot detect. Students miss out on valuable learning opportunities if they rely on an AI to write essays and projects for them.

· AI models can carry out human tasks like academic research, which could be unethical.

Privacy and Security

With the advancement of AI technologies and their prevalent use in our daily lives, there is a concern about the gathering of personal information, data breaches, and AI decision-making. AI can infringe on privacy without the proper security and laws.

· Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems are likely to affect the gathering and utilization of personal information.

· AI can be misused to target specific individuals or groups unfairly.

Data Collection

Companies strive to gather larger and more diverse datasets to feed their AI systems. This can lower bias and make AI more accurate, but the companies may resort to questionable methods that breach ethical standards. In this unending pursuit of data, some organizations may overlook the privacy of individuals or do things that violate legal and moral codes.

· The transformation of human life into data is an inevitable consequence of our increasing reliance on technology.

· Data breaches can lead to serious consequences like stolen money, doxxing, and losing private information to large companies.

Human Labor

Current AI systems heavily depend on human labor. Some people are concerned that machines may completely replace human labor.

· AI technology is capable of automating many tasks and processes that were previously performed by humans. This could put many people out of a job and at risk of losing food, shelter, and other necessities.

· It is important to acknowledge and value the role of human labor in creating and developing artificial intelligence (AI) systems.

Power and Hegemony

AI models are created using existing perspectives and knowledge, which can contain biases and limitations reflecting current societal norms and beliefs. They may not represent changing worldviews and can result in a lack of diversity and inclusivity in AI models. Additionally, AI can reinforce the dominant political and economic systems that are currently in place.

· AI's worldview can be skewed towards specific perspectives, which can have real-world implications for individuals and society.

· AI requires significant financial resources to develop and implement, which only wealthy and powerful individuals and organizations can access.
